For your information, improving the editor is a priority for NetBeans 6.0 (the one after 5.5), where it will go through a major overhaul. You will see more editing features from IDEs such as Eclipse or IDEA in NetBeans. The speed of the editor (code completion, etc.) will also improve because the new infrastructure is more lightweight.
